Annael's Lived-in Bottle!

Annael's BIG NEWS: I have MOVED!

Yes, that's right, I finally got out of this hole and found a wonderful person who's giving me space on her server. Everything's up and updated, brand-spanking-new and better, but henceforth you will find me at

Annael's Lived-in Bottle at http://www.gmga.net/bluesrat/

If you're curious, or considering a site at Fortunecity, here's why I'm moving:

All right. There's more reason for me to move my site than getting rid of aggravating banners. Now, the banners have always been there, and I never minded them too much. Hazards of the medium and all that. The pop-up ads are far more upsetting, and are a recent addition to Fortunecity's money-grubbing repertoire. But the big kicker is, they just finished revamping their site--nay, their entire business system--and are no longer free. The bastards have reorganized everything so that I can't actually access my account on the browser. The only thing I can do is edit through HTML/FTP programs. Mind you, this is probably the better way of doing things, but the thing is that before, they had a browser-side HTML editor (ie I could write these pages and upload in Netscape without running three different programs), and a whole Page Manager thing with the lists of all my files, directories, how much room they were taking up, etc. Now, they just won't tell me anything. I have to guess based on what I've got saved on my diskette copy at home. So who knows when I'll be running out of room? Plus, they downsized the amount of space they're giving people to 10 megs each, after they had it at 50.

Here's the real gripe, though. Now, you can have access to the Page Manager again, and all your files, and the 50 megs back, etc...IF you sign up for a paying account! They have the Bronze (the package they gave for free up till a couple of weeks ago), the Silver (perkiness and light!), and the Gold, which has no pop-ups or ad banners. I think this is one of the cheapest grabs for money I have ever seen. How dare they pull something like this, when they can't even keep all their systems running at once normally? They didn't even give anyone warning! Just *poof* one day I went to edit my web page, and I couldn't get to it! They apparently didn't see any reason to allow their old customers access to their stuff, either, because I can't get the site to let me sign in.

In conclusion, I say that if you ever decide to start your own web page, don't do it here! You're going to be hard-pressed to find a webhoster that doesn't charge you or else give you crappy service, but I can tell you right now that almost anywhere else will at least respect you enough to freakin' tell you before they go and pull something like this! And anyway, the new free service is garbage. You have to download programs from them before you can perform any of the functions they say they offer, and half the time you can't access your stuff anyway because Fortunecity's fiddling with their stuff. Or something. Heck, I don't know. Anyway, it sucks. And that, my dear friends, is why I'm packing up and moving to a new home, where people live who appreciate me!

Cheers! :)
